Establishing the significance of research justifies the
use of resources. Resources like time, money, participants,
data access, and intellectual effort are required to conduct
research. Articulating significance makes a compelling case
for why those resources should be allocated to this work.
Purpose drives Stakeholders are more likely to support and fund research that
methodology is presented as addressing a meaningful gap in knowledge
or practice. Identifying research significance also influences
methodology. Establishing significance early on helps
shape key decisions around research design, methods, and
reporting. The way significance is framed can inform choices
such as research approach (quantitative, qualitative, mixed-
methods) and what evidence would be most appropriate
and convincing. An impactful research significance can be
outlined using the tips shown in fig. 1.4.7

evaluation. When sharing research findings, the significance
provides important context for assessing the quality,
