1.4.5 Importance of Identifying Research

                                            Gaps

In this discussion, we will explore the importance of
identifying research gaps and some strategies and techniques
                                            for doing it effectively.

                                              A) Building on Existing Knowledge: Identifying research
gaps allows researchers to build on existing knowledge by
Additions to understanding what has already been studied and what
the available questions remain unanswered. By reviewing the literature,
knowledge researchers can identify areas where the current knowledge

falls short or lacks consensus. This helps them refine their
research objectives and formulate research questions that
                                            contribute meaningfully to the field.

                                              B) Filling Knowledge Void: Research gaps represent
areas where there is a lack of sufficient information or where
Incomplete the existing knowledge is incomplete or inconclusive. By
knowledge identifying these gaps, researchers can focus their efforts
on filling these voids by conducting studies that generate
new data or insights. This not only enhances the overall
understanding of a subject but also provides opportunities for
                                            further research and exploration.

                                              C) Avoiding Replication: Identifying research gaps is
essential to avoid duplication or unnecessary studies. By
conducting a thorough literature review, researchers can
Researchers can identify existing studies and findings related to their research
conserve resources topic. This enables them to determine whether their proposed
study has already been conducted or if similar research is
underway. By avoiding replication, researchers can conserve
resources and ensure that their work is original and adds value
                                            to the existing knowledge.

                                              D) Advancing the Field: Research gaps often represent areas
where advancements in theory, methodology, or empirical
Proposing new evidence are needed. By identifying these gaps, researchers
theoretical can contribute to the advancement of their field. This may
frameworks involve proposing new theoretical frameworks, developing
innovative research methods, or challenging existing
assumptions. By addressing research gaps, researchers can
push the boundaries of knowledge and facilitate progress in
                                            their respective disciplines.

Types of research gaps in literature review are given in fig.
