4 Reviewing Literature and
UNIT Identifying Research Gap
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, the learner will be able to:
◊ understand the importance of conducting literature review in research.
◊ recognise and differentiate between primary and secondary sources in
the context of research.
◊ familiarise themselves with the idea of the research gap in the research
process.
◊ apply appropriate methods to establish the significance of a research
study.
Background
The desire to bridge a knowledge gap or correct inaccuracies in existing
information can serve as a driving force for individuals to engage in research.
Engaging in a comprehensive literature review not only serves as an initial
step in the research process but also acts as a guiding force, leading us through
unexplored realms of knowledge. Imagine starting a voyage with no map,
unaware of the territories previously explored by those who came before us. A
literature review serves as an illuminating source of information, revealing the
experiences, accomplishments, and obstacles faced by past pioneers. It equips
us with the accumulated wisdom of preceding generations, empowering us to
build upon their achievements and strive for new levels of excellence. In our
quest for knowledge, we rely on the knowledge and insights of those who came
before us, using their collective wisdom to dispel the darkness of ignorance.
Every article, book, and piece of writing contributes to the intricacies of human
understanding, woven together to create a fabric of ingenuity, motivation, and
transformation. Therefore, conducting a literature review aids us in the journey
of discovery as we uncover the mysteries of the past to shape the brilliance of
our future.
